Main spindle
for machine tools and machining centers
A main spindle ensures precise rotational movements. As the central working spindle of a machine tool, it transmits the rotational motion and drive power required for the machining process to the tool or workpiece. Depending on the machine and process requirements, we design the spindle unit as an integrated motor spindle, an externally driven spindle, or a gear spindle.
Our main spindles are tailored to the machining task, speed and torque requirements, interface, and installation conditions. In addition to standardized series, we develop custom main spindles for turning, milling, grinding, and special applications.
Trust our experience and find the right spindle solution for your application—from drive spindles to turning-milling spindle, synchronous spindles, workpiece spindles up to robot spindle.

Main spindle with optimized bearings, cooling, and sensors
The design of a main spindle must take into account machining forces, the speed range, and thermal loads. As an experienced manufacturer, we rely on spindle shafts, bearings, and cooling systems designed specifically for each application. The spindle bearing assembly absorbs the radial and axial forces that occur during machining and influences the stiffness, concentricity, and dynamic behavior of the spindle unit. The appropriate bearing and lubrication concept depends on the application and operating conditions.
Thermal design is also an integral part of the spindle concept. For the 2SP1 spindle, we use a water-cooled synchronous drive motor. Spindle cooling adapted to the operating conditions limits thermally induced displacements and deformations within the main spindle.
Depending on the spindle configuration, integrated sensors can monitor operating conditions and spindle functions. In the 2SP1, for example, sensors are used for indexing and monitoring tool changes. A coordinated design of bearings, cooling, and sensors supports stable and reliable spindle operation.

Main spindle for high-speed machining
High-speed machining places greater demands on the dynamic and thermal behavior of the spindle system. The speed range, bearing design, rigidity, and heat dissipation must therefore be tailored to the tool, machining process, and machine design.
Direct-drive motor spindles enable a compact drive train without mechanical transmission elements such as belts or gear stages between the motor and the spindle shaft. For standard milling machines and machining centers, for example, we offer the 2SP1 as a compact motorized milling spindle with an integrated, water-cooled synchronous drive motor.

Precise main spindle for high speeds
High speed alone does not determine the suitability of a main spindle. The key factor is the interplay of speed, torque, and available power within the operating range relevant to the machining operation. The spindle design must therefore be adapted to the tool, the material, and the machining task.
What is a main spindle, and what is its function?
A main spindle is the spindle of a machine tool used for primary machining . It transmits rotational motion and drive power to the tool or, depending on the machine design, to the workpiece.
In milling, drilling, and machining centers, the main spindle typically drives the tool. In lathes , it holds the workpiece or the workholding device and sets it in rotation. In grinding machines , its function depends on the specific machine and machining design.
The design is determined by the machining process, power requirements, speed and torque ranges, interface, process forces, and the installation conditions of the machine tool.

Function of the Main Spindle in Various Machine Tools
| Machine Tool | Function of the Main spindle | Typical Technical Requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Milling Machine | Mounting and Drive of the Milling Tool | Speed range, torque, rigidity, tool holder, concentricity |
| Machining Center | Tool Drive and Integration into the Automated Tool Change System | Tool interface, clamping and release mechanism, coolant supply, sensors |
| Lathe | Clamping and Driving of Workpieces and Clamping Devices | Torque, spindle nose, spindle bore, bearing stiffness, concentricity |
| Grinding Machine | Drive for the grinding tool or, depending on the machine design, for the workpiece | Rotational speed, concentricity, vibration characteristics, thermal stability |
| Drill | Clamping and Rotational Drive of the Drilling Tool | Speed range, torque, axial load capacity, concentricity, tool holder |
Design the main spindle for the machining process
The design of a main spindle begins with the requirements of the machining process. Speed and torque must be considered in conjunction with power, process forces, and the interface. A main spindle designed for high cutting speeds requires a different design than one intended for applications with high cutting forces and corresponding torque requirements.
Additional constraints arise from tool or workpiece mounting, available installation space, mounting orientation, and machine design. We take these parameters into account when selecting standardized spindles as well as when developing custom solutions. The decisive factor here is not a single maximum value, but rather the alignment of the spindle characteristics with the machine tool’s intended operating range.

Drive Concepts for Main Spindles
The drive concept determines how the motor torque is transmitted to the spindle. Depending on speed, torque, installation space, and machine design, a main spindle can be directly driven, coupled to a separate motor, or driven via an additional gear stage.
| Execution | Drive Concept | Technical Specifications |
|---|---|---|
| Motorized spindle | Electric motor integrated into the spindle unit | Compact powertrain and direct torque transmission from the integrated motor to the spindle shaft |
| Externally Driven Spindle | Separate Motor | Power transmission, for example, via a direct coupling or belt drive |
| Drive spindle | Motor drive with an additional gear stage | Adjustment of speed and torque via the gear ratio for applications with corresponding torque requirements |
Main spindles for various machining processes
Milling, turning, drilling, and grinding place different demands on the operational performance of a main spindle. While certain milling, drilling, and grinding processes require high rotational speeds, other machining tasks may require higher torque or a particularly rigid spindle design.
WEISS tailors the spindle design, performance characteristics, and interfaces to the machining process and machine tool. If the required operating parameters, interfaces, or installation conditions cannot be met by a standard series, we develop custom spindle solutions.
